MacSokoban 2.1
This is an Arcade Game
Mactivity's CD-ROM nr 10 advice: This application did
run on a b/w 68030 processor under System 7.1. It was
also tested on a big ColorScreen of a PowerMacintosh
running System 7.1.2. The game was also tested on a
Quadra with 68040 processor and a 13 inch Color Screen
and System 7.1 by Mactivity.
The word "sokoban" is japanese, and means
"warehouse keeper". The original Sokoban
was the winner of a computer game contest held in Japan
in the early 80's. If you know who the original programmer
was, please enlighten me. The game became a commercial
game on NEC computers. (Info from Takeshi Miyazaki.)
Much later, someone made a version for Unix (Curses).
This game was poorly documented, which is why I didn't
know anything at all about the original game when I
released version 1.0 of MacSokoban. When you start
the game the first time, the first thing you must do
is to create an entry in the Players menu. As delivered,
one player is defined, namely myself. Feel free to
remove me; it just remains as an example.
The object of the game is to, for each level, rearrange
a set of "gold bags" (should perhaps have
been cardboard boxes) to certain positions. When you
have solved all levels, you have won the game. There
is another kind of score kept, but don't bother about
it for now. You move the man with the mouse or the
keyboard. Keyboard movement is done with arrow keys,
"2468" or "hjkl". Clicking with
the mouse in a neighbor square has the same effect
as pressing keys. The man can move the gold bags by
pushing them in front of himself, one at a time. This
of course means that if you push it into a corner,
it is stuck. If you get stuck (which will happen frequently)
you can restart the level from the Edit menu. You can
also save a position with "Copy" and restore
it with "Paste". "Undo" is supported
for the last move. If you press the control key while
pressing a key or clicking, the man will move as far
as possible in the chosen direction. If you press shift
instead, he will move and push as far as possible.
If you click the mouse somewhere but the closest positions,
the path-finding algorithm is activated, and the man
will go to that position if there is an open path there.
When moving using the mouse, you can click-and-drag
to make several moves in a sequence by holding the
mouse button down while moving.
The object of the game is to solve all levels. Does
this mean that the game is over when you have reached
level 50 (or level 35 in the "Extra" file)?
Not necessarily. The game keeps records of the lowest
number of moves and pushes used for each level, so
you can try to find better ways to solve levels. The
"Fiddle" menu is intended for fiddling around
with theese things. Choose "Show statistics window"
to see the number of moves you are using when playing.
If you get a new record, it will be indicated in the
Statistics window. Please note that this "optimizing"
should not be considered the main point with the game.
Solve first, optimize later if you think that is fun.
