Rows

You will see a large <TEXTAREA> editable text box when they edit an HTML file. This number tells SiteEdit how tall (in rows) to make the text box.

Columns

You will see a large <TEXTAREA> editable text box when they edit an HTML file. This number tells SiteEdit how wide (in columns) to make the text box.

Show all File Names

Normally SiteEdit will only display files ending in ".htm" or ".html". This option will display all files, regardless of their names (e.g. .gif and .jpg files).

Show File/Folder Options in File Listing

Show all the file and folder operations (moving, copying, renaming, and deleting) in the main file listing window. Unchecking this option provides an "Options" link that lets you perform all these operations from another page. This reduces the amount of HTML in the file listing and reduces the width of the window.

Create Backup Files

When checked, SiteEdit will save a ".bak" version of the html file every time you save an HTML file. In an emergency, this allows you to retrieve the old file.

SiteEdit Use

Folder Navigator

SiteEdit displays the current folder being listed at the top of the file listing. All enclosing folders are listed as well. The base folder is always named "Top Level" and is equivalent to the folder specified in the user's preferences. Click on any folder name in the hierarchy to open that folder.

New Web Page, New Folder

You can quickly create a new text document or folder in the current folder by clicking on the "New Web Page" or "New Folder" link to the right of the current folder name. If this link does not appear, then "Allow file editing" has been turned off. By default, SiteEdit brings up a skeleton HTML document that you can use to quickly create a new file. If you want to use your own template, create a file named "NewFile.html" and place it in your home directory.

File Upload

You can easily upload HTML documents, pictures, or other documents, to Euregio.Net's Web server. This feature requires a browser that supports file upload. Most current browsers, including Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer support file upload. If you are uploading from a Macintosh, remember that only the data fork of a file is uploaded. Text and image data is normally found in the data fork of a file. Applications, however, store information in both the data fork and resource fork. Files with information in the resource fork should be encoded ( BinHex for example ) before being uploaded or else the resource information is lost.

File/Folder Listing

The name of all files and folders in the current folder are displayed. Clicking on the name of a file links you to that file (so that you can quickly view or download the file). Clicking on the name of a folder opens that folder and gives you a listing of its contents.

File Editing

An "Edit" option is present for all files in the current folder. When you click "Edit", a Web page is created with the path and name of the document on top, and one or multiple <textarea> fields with the contents of the file. The edit option is only meant to be used for text files; HTML pages in particular. Because the contents of the documents are presented within a Web page, certain characters (such as the angle bracket "<") are converted to their text equivalents so they do not disturb the enclosing Web page. Likewise, when the file is saved, certain characters are converted back (but not all characters since we don't always know which were converted or originally designated that way). Thus the "Edit" option is not suitable for most non-HTML documents (especially image files!). The original file not modified, however, until the "Save" button is clicked, so if you accidentally edit an improper file, simply back up and select another file.

Some browsers are not capable of handling large <textarea> fields within a Web page. Thus files that are over a certain size (appoximately 20K) are returned in multiple <textarea> fields. You can then edit portions within each field, and when the "Save" button is clicked, the pieces are put back together again.

The name and partial path of the file that you are editing is displayed in an input field at the top of the page. Although you normally do not edit this field, you may designate a new name for a file, or specify a different path (as long as it is valid). When this occurs, the original file being edited is left untouched, and a new file is created or overwritten.

If the "Create backup file" option is selected in the SiteEdit Preferences, then the original file is saved with a ".bak" extension before the new file is written.

File/Folder Moving and Copying

If the "Allow File/Folder Moving" or "Allow File/Folder Copying" option is selected in the SiteEdit Prefereces, then a "Move/Copy" option is present for all files and folders in the current folder. If you click on "Move/Copy", you are presented with a folder listing. Navigate the folder hierarchy until you select the folder where you want to move or copy the file or folder. Select the option (Move, Copy, Copy alias of) and click "OK" to perform the operation.

You may not move a file or folder from one disk to another. You also may not copy an entire folder (you can, however, create an alias to a folder).

File/Folder Renaming

If the "Allow File/Folder Renaming" option is selected in the SiteEdit Prefereces, then a "Rename" option is present for all files and folders in the current folder. If you click on "Rename", you are presented with a Web page with an edit field where you can rename the file or folder. After clicking "Rename As", the file or is renamed. This does not affect the contents of the file, so you can safely rename all types of files on your server. The "Rename" option does not let you change the path to the file or folder in the new name.

File/Folder Deletion

If the "Allow File Deletion" option is selected in the SiteEdit Preferences, then a "Delete" option is present for all files and folders in the current folder. If you click "Delete" you are presented with a Web page that confirms your desire to delete the file or folder. If you do not want to delete the file or folder, back up and select another. Folders may only be deleted when they are empty.
